A few tips & tricks for handling to ensure correct measurement

For precise lactate measurement, measurement at the ear is generally the preferred method, especially in performance diagnostics. The earlobe provides very stable and accurate values due to its good blood circulation and low muscle activity. However, if you are training alone, measuring at the ear is rather impossible. If you measure on your finger, follow the tips below to obtain a precise measurement:

Tips for accurate lactate measurement on the finger

Sweat is the biggest interference factor when measuring lactate, as it can contaminate the drop of blood and falsify the measured values. For a correct measurement and to avoid skin contact with the test strip and thus possible contamination, you should proceed as follows:

1. Preparation and lancing procedure

  • Insert a test strip into the LACTATE PLUS. The device switches on automatically and you now have approx. 2 minutes to take a measurement before the device switches off.

  • Clean the puncture area: Use a cloth (such as a cell swab) to clean the area to remove any residue. Avoid using disinfectant if possible, as this could falsify the measured values.

  • Wipe off the first drop of blood: After pricking, wipe off the first drop of blood with a cloth, as it may contain residue or dilution from sweat that could affect the measurement.

  • Take a fresh drop of blood: Press lightly on the puncture area until a new drop of blood appears. Caution: Do not press too hard, as too much pressure can distort the blood composition and therefore the measurement result.

  • Select a suitable finger: The ring finger or middle finger is best suited for the measurement, as they are often less stressed and therefore have less muscle activity.

2. Handling the meter

  1. Place the device on the middle finger: Place the measuring device loosely on your middle finger so that it is stable.

  2. Grasp with thumb and index finger: Grip the device with your thumb and index finger to hold it securely.

  3. Use the ring finger as a spacer: Place your ring finger slightly below the device so that there is a small gap between the skin and the test strip.

  4. Hold the test strip frontally to the drop of blood: Hold the device so that the test strip is aimed directly at the fresh drop of blood without touching the skin.

  5. The test strip draws in the required amount of blood on its own. Wait until the countdown begins and only then remove the device.

This Handling minimizes the risk of sweat or skin contact influencing the measurement result and ensures precise lactate measurement.

3. Use the right lancets

Also make sure you use the correct lancets for the lactate measurement. If you use unsuitable lancets or lancets that are too flat, not enough blood may come out, which can lead to incorrect readings. Our lancets in the store are specially developed to ensure optimal puncture so that you reliably receive the required drop of blood for an accurate lactate measurement.
